くらべて覚えます。

分かれ目は 3 つあります。
lookの 3 つ … 探すのがfor、辞書で調べるのがup、面倒を見るのがafter。
動詞ではなく後ろの語が意味を決めているという、この章でいちばん大事な例です。put onとwear…put onは「身につける動作」、wearは「着ている状態」。
「今コートを着ている」はwearで、put onではありません。take offの 2 つの意味 … 服なら「脱ぐ」、飛行機なら「離陸する」。
どちらも「くっついていたものが離れる」で、offが同じ働きをしています。
